Using Frequency Converters in Automatic Process Control Systems of Crude Oil Distillation Plants

One of the most important tasks in oil refinery management is cost reduction, particularly the technological component of processing costs. Power comsumption in oil refinery management is large. Application of frequency converters (ac drives) is one way to achieve this goal because the advantage of applying frequency inverters (Variable frequency drives) is for energy conservation.

Application of frequency converters helped to significantly improve the quality of air cooler control by means of regulation of the fan rotation speed by eliminating negative factors which affected the operation of air coolers due to ambient temperature fluctuations. The dynamics of air cooler power consumption has also changed.

Branches of Automation

Automation are formed as the following types: Autonomous Automation, Home Automation, Office Automation.

Autonomous automation refers to 'the use of autonomous software agents to adapt the controllers of computer controlled industrial machinery and processes'.


Home automation (smart homes, domotics) is a field within building automation, specializing in the specific automation requirements of private homes and in the application of automation techniques for the comfort and security of its residents. Home automation is popular in today's daily life. Although many techniques used in building automation (such as light and climate control, control of doors and window shutters, security and surveillance systems, etc.) are also used in home automation, additional functions in home automation can include the control of multi-media home entertainment systems, automatic plant watering and pet feeding, automatic scenes for dinners and parties, and a more user-friendly control interface.

When home automation is installed during construction of a new home, usually control wires are added before the interior walls are installed. These control wires run to a controller, which will then control the environment.

Home automation is about automation within residences.


Office automation refers to the varied computer machinery and software used to digitally create, collect, store, manipulate, and relay office information needed for accomplishing basic tasks and goals.

Automation (industrial automation, numerical control) is the use of control systems such as computers to control industrial machinery and processes, reducing the need for human intervention.

In the scope of industrialization, automation is a step beyond mechanization. Whereas mechanization provided human operators with machinery to assist them with the physical requirements of work, automation greatly reduces the need for human sensory and mental requirements as well. And processes and systems can also be automated.

Nowadays automation plays an increasingly important role in the global economy and in daily experience. Engineers strive to combine automated devices with mathematical and organizational tools to create complex systems for a rapidly expanding range of applications and human activities.
