Hydropower in China
China is scrambling to build massive hydropower dams to curb pollution and slake its thirst for energy.
China expected to add an annual hydropower generating capacity of 5 million kw, on average, between 2000 and 2010, to usher in a booming decade of hydropower development. China will develop a total hydropower capacity of 125 million kw, or one third of the country's exploitable hydropower resources by 2010.
By 2020, most of China's planned hydropower projects except those in Tibet will be completed. Therefore, the future development of China's hydropower will turn gradually to the Jinsha River, Lancang River, the upper reaches of Nu River, and Yarlung Zangbo River in Tibet.
