dynamic braking

Before we explain what's dynamic braking, we need to know two concepts of induction motor: motoring, and regeneration

When an induction motor's rotor is turning slower than the synchronous speed set by the drive's output power, the motor is transforming electrical power obtained from the drive into mechanical energy available at the drive shaft of the motor. This process is motoring.

When the induction motor's rotor is turning faster than the synchronous speed set by the drive's output power, the motor is transforming mechanical energy available at the drive shaft of the motor into electrical energy. This electrical energy can be transferred back to the drive. This process is called as regeneration. Thus if the motor is regenerating, the DC bus voltage will increase, thus causing an over voltage fault at the drive.

How can we do in the situation of regeneration? Dynamic braking plays a role here.

So what's dynamic braking?

A solution to regenerating, which cause over voltage fault at the drive, can provided through allowing the drive to feed the regenerated electrical power to a resistor. The resistor then transforms it into thermal energy. This process is referred to as dynamic braking.
