International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC): Motor Standards
Worldwide, various standards of a motor exist. These various standards specify various operating and constructional parameters of a motor. The two most widely used parameters are the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC)
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a European-based organization. That publishes and promotes worldwide, the mechanical and electrical standards for motors, among other things. In simple terms, it can be said that the IEC is the international counterpart of the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA). The IEC standards are associated with motors used in many countries (Not North America). These standards can be found in the IEC 34-1-16. The motors which meet or exceed these standards are referred to as IEC motors.
